There are not many underwater animals that capture my interest more than a ray. It doesn’t matter if it’s a giant manta or a plate sized blue spotted ray, all rays are of interest. Their bizarre shape and large, expressive eyes combine to make a charismatic animal. Although many people are understandably cautious around these rays, they certainly are not aggressive animals. It’s always good to be aware of the barbed tail of a stingray but some are more comfortable around divers than others. Swimming slowly and carefully I was able to get very close to this particular individual and capture a photograph of its eye. Note the mass of scarring all around the area, perhaps from a scuffle over mating?
