A whale shark encounter is high on the list of every diver (or snorkeler). These harmless sharks are the largest fish on the planet and can reach a length of over 40 feet. This photo was taken in Cendrawasih Bay in West Papua, Indonesia where whale sharks are a common sight. Unfortunately, these beautiful animals are considered an endangered species as they are fished in many areas of the world. They are a protected species in Indonesia.
