The Mantis Shrimp

mantis shrimp and eggs in Bali

One of everyone’s favourite critters on the reef is the multi coloured Peacock Mantis Shrimp.  Often seen scuttling from rock to rock on many dive sites throughout the world, this particular type of mantis is of the “smashing” variety.  The easiest way to tell the difference between a smashing mantis and spearing mantis is via the eyeballs. As you can see on the attached photo, this mantis has round eyes, whereas a spearing mantis shrimp will have oblong shaped eyes instead.  As an added bonus, this beautiful mantis shrimp even has a brood of bright red eggs that it’s protecting.
