Komodo Liveaboard Trip on Samambaia August 2023

Daily Photo Manta Ray

Komodo on my mind! We are happy to announce a liveaboard trip to the always amazing Komodo National Park aboard the wonderful Samambaia Liveaboard. From 21-30 August 2023 we will cruise this incredible area of Indonesia. This nine night trip will begin and end in Labuan Bajo, a short flight from either Bali or Jakarta. We will visit all of the top spots in the surrounding area to enjoy a mix of both large and small marine life. A Komodo itinerary offers the most varied mix of encounters in Indonesia, from groups of manta rays to weird and wonderful macro critters.

Highlights of a Komodo Liveaboard Trip:

There are so many great dives in the Komodo area but we will list a few of our favourites here.

Castle Rock and Crystal Rock – Two offshore pinnacles in the northern end of the park, home to large schools of fish, colourful corals and a healthy population of reef sharks.

Shotgun – A high velocity ride through a narrow channel, great for encounters with turtles and the occasional manta ray. A beautiful hard coral garden is one of the highlights.

Giant Trevally Hunting

Batu Monco – A calm bay with one of the healthiest reefs in Indonesia, a great place to snorkel.

Manta Alley – World class manta ray site, the water can be cooler here but the cold water nutrients is what attracts the mantas. (Weather permitting)

Gili Banta – Located just west of the park, this small island boasts stunning coral reefs as well as a few action packed dive sites.

Sangeang – The beautiful twin peak volcanic island that dominates the skyline. This is world class black sand diving with a large variety of incredible macro critters such as octopus, ghost pipefish, and nudibranchs galore.

Visit the Dragons – Of course no trip to Komodo is complete without a trip to visit the largest lizard in the world! Get up close and personal with these amazing animals in the National Park.

More Information:

A typical day aboard the Samambaia consists of 4 dives, 3 during the day and a night dive. There is not a lot of overnight travel during a Komodo cruise so night dives will be available on most nights.

Temperatures in August do range from the north to the south end of the park. The north will typically be around 27-28 C (80F) while the south (Manta Alley) can be quite a lot colder, anywhere from 17-23C (63-73F). We highly recommend a warmer wetsuit for the southern diving. Daytime temperatures are warm but night time may get cooler, we recommend bringing a sweater or light jacket. There is also possibility of wind throughout the day, please keep that in mind.

Diving is from two tenders, groups will be split in order to have a maximum of 4 divers per dive guide.

Getting to Labuan Bajo is easy, there are multiple daily direct flights from both Jakarta and Bali.

If you would like to extend your trip before or after the Samambaia, why not dive with us in Bali? The Underwater Tribe offers private, custom dive trips in Bali with our world class dive guides.

There are National Park and Harbour Fees to be paid while on board, these two fees are not included in the charter price and will be collected on board. Prices can change if the National Park rules change but as of this time its USD $75 for Park Fees and $250 for Harbour Fees.
