Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, and Dragons 30 June – 11 July 2019

We start this epic Critters and Giants trip from Bali.  No domestic flight is needed before boarding the boat. We will board the luxurious liveaboard Samambaia directly from South Bali. Enjoy an 11 night trip from Bali to Komodo with a focus on both big animals and incredible critter encounters. There is no diving on the 30th as the boat departs Bali and heads to the East.  The diving will start in the Eastern Lombok/Western Sumbawa region.  One of the biggest attractions in the first few days of the trip will be the opportunity to swim with whale sharks!  There is a special place in this region where whalesharks are regularly encountered. The whaleshark encounters are done during the early morning, with regular diving in the afternoon.  If the first day proves to be successful, a second day may be added with the whalesharks.

Heading to Komodo

Once we are finished with the whalesharks, the boat will continue to the East with stops at Sangeang Island, Banta, and the Komodo National Park.  In the park, we will certainly hit all of the top sites such as Castle and Crystal Rock.  One of the highlights in Komodo is the opportunity to dive and snorkel with majestic manta rays.  To top the Big Animal triumvirate, we will also head to land to encounter the prehistoric looking Komodo Dragons.

Critter Hunting

The best part about our itinerary is the opportunity to enjoy world class critter diving as well.  Satonda Island, Sangeang, Banta, and many areas of Komodo and Rinca are some of the top locations for critters in Indonesia. We will make sure to dive many of these amazing sites during this trip to encounter both critters and giants!  For underwater photographers, this is the ultimate itinerary in Indonesia for a wide variety of subjects both big and small.

What to Expect on a Critters and Giants trip?

This 11 night adventure is not the typical Komodo to Bali itinerary.  Instead, we will be one of the few liveaboards who visit this new whaleshark hotspot. We aren’t ignoring critter lovers though, we will also spend time diving on some of the rich macro sites that the Komodo and Sumbawa areas offer.   This entire area is a critter lovers paradise, macro and wide angle opportunities abound!

Travel Details

There is a domestic flight required from Labuan Bajo back to Bali or to Jakarta on the 11^th of July.  Once you are booked on the trip we can organize this flight for you.  We recommend that you don’t plan your international travel on the 11th in case of domestic flight delays. There are direct flights from LBJ to both Bali and Jakarta.  For those interested in spending more time diving in Bali, we can customize an itinerary for you either before or after the trip.
