The flying gurnard is a very unique looking fish with wide, bird like wings and large eyes. These bottom dwelllers typically “walk” along sandy bottoms searching for food in the sand. When startled or threatened, these fish spread their wings and “fly” over the bottom in a quick move. This photo is of a juvenile specimen which was captured in mid flight by panning with the subject. The blurred sand comes from the motion of the camera and cameraman while following the fish. These cool fish are commonly seen in Indonesia, we see them often in the Tulamben area of Bali as well as in Lembeh.
