Daily Photo USAT Liberty Wreck Cargo Hold

The USAT Liberty is one of the most iconic dive sites in the world. The story of the wreck is rather unique when it comes to diveable wrecks. It was part of a convoy in 1942 but was hit by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. As the torpedo crippled the ship, it was towed to its present location in north east Bali. For the next 20 years it sat on the beach as another victim of the war. However, in 1963 the entire history of this ship changed as it was driven into the water by the large volcanic eruption of Mt Agung. It’s quite possible that the USAT Liberty is the only diveable shipwreck that was sunk by a volcano.
