Cephalopods are some of the most intelligent and interesting animals in the world. Octopus, squid, and cuttlefish are found in every ocean and commonly found by divers. Although octopus and squid are more well known to the layman, cuttlefish are always popular with divers. The charismatic cuttlefish range in size from thumb sized to larger than a football. They tend to live near the bottom where they feed upon crabs, shrimp, and other bottom dwellers.
One of the most interesting behaviours of cuttlefish is their mating displays. It’s not uncommon for 3 or 4 males to joust with each other over the attentions of a female. Once the female decides on a mate they will briefly come together and the male will insert its sperm into the female in a quick move that is easy to miss. To many it may appear this photo shows one cuttlefish about to eat another but its a little bit more kinky than that!
