Komodo Dragon – Daily Photo 2 February 2020

Komodo Dragon

The Komodo Dragon truly is a majestic animal. Many people think they are scary looking of course, their cold reptilian eyes lend themselves to that narrative. However, the largest of lizards is a regal beast that stands alone atop its ecosystem. Have you ever encountered one?

The Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis, is only found on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and several other surrounding islands. Adults have no predators (other than man) and feed on deer, pig, water buffalo, and carrion. With around 3000 individuals in their wild, they are not considered endangered. However, they are a vulnerable species due to their small natural range.

We make it a point to find these amazing animals whenever we visit the Komodo National Park. We find them near the Ranger Stations where expert rangers guide visitors safely through the forest. It’s possible to find them wandering along the beach from time to time. The attached photo is from Horseshoe Bay on the island of Rinca. The best time to spot dragons in this cove is in the late afternoon when the sunlight shines on the beach. When the world gets back to normal we can’t wait to take a group of eager divers back to Komodo!
